SundownIsland > 2007 was a great year for the Sundown Island breeding colony. There were many late season babies. This is a very young pelican, sporting a combination of downy feathers and juvenile feathers. The juvenile tail feathers have not grown in. This is the youngest of all of the pelicans I observed during workday. Photo credit: Marcy Crowe Spears

SundownIsland > This American Brown Pelican fledgling seem to have escaped the nest and decided to stroll along the beach. The baby terns and their parents were not too happy about it either. The fledgling didn't pay much attention to them.

SundownIsland > Closer view of the dock at Sundown Island. Notice all of the junvenile pelicans hanging out at the dock. There only seems to be one adult around.
SundownIsland > This photo of hundreds of baby terns with a few American Brown Pelican baby-sitters was taken on the Northeast corner of the island. It was like this for three or four hundred yards. Note that there wasn't much shore area for them because of erosion on this side of the island.
