SundownIsland  > Erosion > 2007 Fall Workday, Condition of the Island

SundownIsland > 2007: Only a few of the Silver-leaf Sunflowers were still blooming on the island during workday. Most were represented by thick dead stalks that you had to step over. Photo credit: Marcy Crowe Spears
SundownIsland > The new sign on the dock is holding up well. Photo credit: Marcy Crowe Spears
SundownIsland > The dock actually looks like it is being swallowed up by the island. With all of the rain that we had in South Texas this year, everything flourished. Photo credit: Marcy Crowe Spears
SundownIsland > I suspect these juvenile pelicans are hanging out close to the fisherman for a free snack. This is at the Northeast end of the island. Notice how choppy the water is. There was also a high tide so there wasn't much beach to walk on here. Photo credit: Marcy Crowe Spears
SundownIsland > The grass has taken hold on the Northeast side of the island close to the dock. Photo credit: Marcy Crowe Spears
SundownIsland > 2007: The area outlined in blue is the last vestage of one of the Geotubes. Most of the material has disintegrated and left a large block of sand. The item outlined in red includes the brick mats that were installed in 2003. Photo credit: Marcy Crowe Spears
SundownIsland > This is the same Geotube on the Northeast corner of island, facing north, installed in October 2004. Notice the brick mats at the right edge of the photo. As of 2007 this Geotube has pretty much dissolved, as shown in the next photo. Photo credit: Marcy Crowe Spears
SundownIsland > 2007: This is the same Geotube shown in the previous photo, installed in 2004. Had it not been there, this part of the island might have already disappeared. Photo credit: Marcy Crowe Spears
SundownIsland > Another view of the same Northeast shore, closer to the shredded Geotube and brick mats.Photo credit: Marcy Crowe Spears
SundownIsland > 2007: The windmill was almost ready to fall in the bay two years ago. Now, thanks to the dredge fill place on the East side of the island in 2005, there is some distance between the windmill and the water. Photo credit: Marcy Crowe Spears
SundownIsland > 2005: This is a view of the same beach location as the previous photo, taken in 2005. The rest of the dock is off to the left (not pictured). Notice how much higher the sand is in this photo. This view is looking south. In 2005, the water was fairly deep until you got really close to the island. Photo credit: Marcy Crowe Spears
SundownIsland > There was still a fair amount of Lantana on the island, but mostly scattered blooms. Then I found this pretty pink flower, by itself. After I looked at nearly 1,000 flower images and still could not find it--I gave up. Anyone know what this is? Send me an e-mail: marcyspears@mac.com. Photo credit: Marcy Crowe Spears

SundownIsland > The Silver-leaf Sunflowers did really well this summer because of the rain. By October there are only a few left. Mostly all that you will see are the dead stalks shown here by Pond 3. In 2005 and 2006 they were not as tall or prolific because there was not as much rain those years.
SundownIsland > Just having some fun with frothy water at the edge of the dock. Photo credit: Marcy Crowe Spears
SundownIsland > From this angle I am south of the dock with the windmill on my left. The water is shallow almost all the way to the end of the dock. When the dock was built in 2003, it was deeper at the end of the dock. It has become a bit too shallow to use as a normal dock during windy, choppy weather (which is most of the time). SundownIsland > This is the same beach, but viewed from the dock (Northeast side of the island), looking South. With high tide, there isn't much walking room. Photo credit: Marcy Crowe Spears
SundownIsland > I'm not sure, but I think this is Desert Marigold, which blooms throughout the year in Texas. These of course are volunteers, like the rest of us. Photo credit: Marcy Crowe Spears
