2005 Annual Census - SundownIsland's Photos

These photos were taken on Sundown Island the day of the annual bird count, May 20, 2005. Lots of pelicans!

SundownIsland > The Roseate Spoonbills seem to love the old towers. The one pictured here with the Laughing Gulls was the only one that didn't fly off when I approached.

SundownIsland > These nestling American Brown Pelicans are probably less than one week old. At the time of the annual bird count, there were pelicans ranging from nestlings to juveniles scattered all over on Sundown Island.

SundownIsland > This adult Brown Pelican seemed to be conducting a class with these fledglings.

SundownIsland > Notice how thin the naked skin pouch is under the fledglings bill. As an adult, this pouch can hold approximately three gallons of fish and water.

SundownIsland > This adult Tricolored Heron seem to want to pose for the camera. It never did fly away.

SundownIsland > Hungry Great White Egret fledglings.

SundownIsland > This Great White Egret fledgling is probably two or three weeks old.
